Becoming a Coach

Written by  Tuesday, 02 February 2016 20:00

If you love sports and badminton in particular, coaching a team or an individual can be a fun and rewarding way to be involved. From working with children as a volunteer to coaching the professionals at the highest level, coaching requires someone with a love of the game and working with people of various ages.

Coaches help people of all levels and abilities to develop and improve within sport. They can have a positive influence on people’s lifelong involvements in badminton and be seen as positive role models, not only by the players and athletes, but also by their families. A coach can help develop life skills such as working with and part of a team, respect, confidence and control. Communication, motivation and planning are integral elements of any coaching role. It’s critical that the coach is trained, qualified and committed to providing a fun, high quality learning experience for the players.

Getting qualified as a Badminton Coach

Badminton Australia (BA) are the peak body that award and accredit all badminton coaches across Australia. However, it is the State or Territory organisations that plan and deliver these courses. If you would like to take part in a badminton teaching or coaching course to learn the skills and knowledge required to become an accredited coach, then you should contact your State body to find out when they are running their next suitable course.

Once you have undertaken the coaching training with your State or Territory, your Coach Educator or Coaching Coordinator in your State or Territory will submit your details to the BA Education Manager. She will assess your results and feedback from your Coach Educator, and if all is in order, you will be accredited. The cost for the accreditation is $50 and should be paid directly to your Coach Coordinator. This is often done at the start of your training, though your Coach Coordinator can confirm this when you enrol and start your course.

One approved by BA’s Education Manager, you will receive the ASC endorsed Coaching Card with your name, details and coaching licence expiry date. Your coaching licence is for four years. To keep your coaching accreditation relevant, you should coach and attend or complete courses and continuing education programs. At the 3½ year point, you should re-accredit to ensure that your coaching status remains valid and that you do not have any time where you are coaching without a BA coaching license.

Performance pathway – Badminton Coach

Australian Sports Commission (ASC) accredits BA’s coaching courses through the National Coach Accreditation Scheme (NCAS).

There are currently four levels each targeted at developing players and competitors of varying abilities along the performance pathway. Each State/Territory Member Association delivers these courses, though BA accredits and approves badminton coach accreditation and re-accreditation.

BA is currently in the process of aligning the four levels to the FTEM Framework. However, the current levels are Level 1, Level 1A (Advanced), Level 2 and Level 3. These BA Coaching courses will continue to be recognised and delivered whilst the implementation of the BA Coaching Review (embed link: to download the Coach Education Review) is undertaken.

Transitioning to a new coaching framework

In 2016, the BA Board approved the new coaching framework for badminton in Australia. Currently, all the courses and qualifications listed on this website are recognised and accredited by BA. Any course that you complete, or any continuing professional development (CPD) that you undertake must be approved by BA’s National Education Manager while this is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).

BA’s Education Manager is currently working with the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) to align all BA Coaching and Officiating qualifications and courses to the ASC FTEM framework in Australia. BA works with Badminton Oceania and Badminton World Federation (BWF) to govern badminton, oversee tournaments and competition, and develop coach and technical officials’ education and pathways.
